Can you sell a car with a blown head gasket?
Yes. You can sell a car with a blown head gasket as-is, without paying for the repair. A junk car buyer makes an offer on the car as it stands and tows it away, so you don’t drive it again. Around Hammond, Indiana, we make an offer, tow it free and pay you at pickup, often on the same day.
Here’s what a failing gasket looks like, why the repair so often isn’t worth it on an older car, and how the sale works.
The signs, in plain words
A head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and the cylinder head. When it fails, coolant, oil and combustion gas start going where they shouldn’t. CRC Industries lists seven common symptoms:
- Overheating: the temperature gauge sits higher than normal, again and again.
- White exhaust smoke: thick and white, and it doesn’t clear once the engine is warm.
- Contaminated oil: milky or frothy on the dipstick, lighter in colour or creamy in texture.
- Coolant loss with no visible leak: the level drops but there’s no puddle under the car.
- Bubbles in the radiator or coolant reservoir while the engine runs.
- Poor running: rough idle, misfires, a noticeable loss of power.
- External leaks: oil or coolant seeping down the side of the engine.
One of those alone can have other causes. Two or three together, especially milky oil and white smoke, point firmly at the gasket.
Why the repair so often loses
The gasket itself isn’t expensive. The labour is. Getting to it means taking the top of the engine apart, and many shops check the head for warping while it’s off. If the car kept running hot for a while, that check can turn up more bad news.
Then there’s the rest of the car. Head gaskets often fail on engines with plenty of miles on them, in cars that already need tyres, brakes or a suspension part. Fixing the gasket doesn’t fix any of that. That’s the moment many owners decide to sell to junk car buyers around Hammond instead: the repair would cost more than the car is worth once it’s done.
If you’re still weighing it, our guide on when to junk a car lays out the signs that a daily driver is done. And if the car recently failed its emissions test on top of everything, the Lake County emissions testing guide explains where the program stands.
Stop driving it
This is the part people skip. CRC Industries warns that continuing to drive with a blown head gasket can lead to a warped cylinder head or a cracked engine block, and advises stopping if the engine is overheating or you see white smoke. You don’t need to limp it anywhere to sell it. Leave it parked and the tow comes to you.
The same goes for any car whose brakes or steering you no longer trust; see cars that are unsafe to drive.
Four moves from hot engine to empty driveway
- Fill in the form. Year, make, model and the title question, then your name, phone and the pickup address.
- Describe the symptoms on the call. Overheating, smoke, milky oil, whether it still starts.
- Hear the offer. If it works for you, we book the tow.
- Get paid at pickup. The tow is on us, and payment is made when the car is loaded.
We buy these cars in Whiting, East Chicago, Munster and Highland, the four towns around Hammond, Indiana.
The title question, answered
A signed Indiana title is the simplest route. No title? We can still help. Indiana wants either the title (a BMV duplicate is $15) or a BMV certificate of authority ($4), and a car under 15 model years old legally needs one of the two. Say what papers you have and we’ll confirm the route on the call. Have the keys ready if you have them, and take your belongings out before the truck arrives.
